본 글은 미국 고등학교에서 학업 중인 2세대 한국계 미국인으로서의 개인적 경험을 바탕으로 작성되었다. 한국계 학생들에 관한 관찰이지만, 모든 학생에게 일괄적으로 적용되지는 않을 수 있다.
한국계 학생들의 삶은 오늘날만큼 복잡했던 적이 없다. 학업, 사회활동, 과외활동 등 모든 측면이 최근 몇 년간 관리하기 더욱 어려워졌으며, 이로 인해 균형 유지가 더욱 도전적인 과제가 되었다. 학생 경험의 두 가지 핵심 요소인 교육과 사회생활이 특히 조화를 이루기 어려워진 배경에는 두 가지 주요 요인이 있다: 대학 입시가 기하급수적으로 경쟁이 심화되었고, 문화적 기대치가 지속적으로 높아지고 있다는 점이다.
오늘날 한국계 학생들은 전례 없는 기대치에 직면해 있으며, 이로 인해 더욱 열심히 공부하고, 더 부지런히 일하며, 대학 진학 가능성을 높일 수 있는 인턴십과 기회를 추구하게 된다. 이러한 압박은 학업적 역량을 향상시키지만, 고등학교 시절을 즐기고 만족스러운 사회생활을 유지할 수 있는 능력을 현저히 감소시킨다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 한국계 학생들은 주로 또래와 사회적 집단의 영향으로 인해 이러한 기대를 충족시키기 위해 노력한다.
이러한 한국계 사회적 집단 내에서는 대학 지원을 위한 강력한 “스펙” 구축에 대한 공통된 관심이 두드러진다. 시험 점수, 성적, 인턴십, 각종 성취를 포함하는 이러한 “스펙”은 많은 한국계 학생들의 사회적 지위에 중요한 요소가 되었으며, 약한 “스펙”은 또래 사이에서 잠재적으로 난처한 상황을 초래할 수 있다.
명문 대학의 점점 더 엄격해지는 요구 사항은 인상적인 “스펙” 개발을 고된 시간 소모적인 과정으로 변화시켰다. 결과적으로, 한국계 학생들은 어려운 선택에 직면한다: 또래로부터의 존중과 명문 기관으로부터의 인정을 얻기 위해 학업적 우수성에 전념할 것인가, 아니면 학업 성과에 덜 집중하며 고등학교 경험을 즐기되 사회적 지위를 잃을 위험을 감수할 것인가.
모든 한국계 학생이 동일한 경험을 공유하는 것은 아니다. 일부는 활발한 사회생활과 학업적 우수성을 성공적으로 균형 있게 유지하며, 또 다른 이들은 이러한 문화적 압박을 전혀 경험하지 않을 수도 있다. 이러한 관점을 공유함으로써, 독자들이 주변의 한국계 학생들이 왜 그토록 다양한 요구와 압박에 직면한 삶을 살고 있는지 더 잘 이해할 수 있기를 바란다.
Balancing Academics and Social Life as a Korean American Student
This article is based on my personal experiences as a second-generation Korean American high school student. While my observations focus on Korean students, they may not apply universally.
The life of Korean students has never been as complex as it is today. Academics, social activities, extracurriculars, and other aspects have become increasingly difficult to manage in recent years, making it challenging to maintain balance. Education and social life, two critical components of a student’s experience, have become particularly difficult to reconcile due to two significant factors: college admissions have grown exponentially more competitive, and cultural expectations continue to intensify.
Korean students today face unprecedented expectations, driving them to study harder, work more diligently, and pursue internships and opportunities that might enhance their college prospects. While this pressure certainly improves their academic credentials, it significantly diminishes their ability to enjoy their high school years and maintain fulfilling social lives. Nevertheless, Korean students persist in meeting these expectations largely due to influences from their Korean peers and social circles.
Within these Korean social circles, a shared focus on building strong “statistics” for college applications prevails. These “stats”—encompassing test scores, grades, internships, and achievements—have become central to many Korean students’ social standing, making weak “stats” potentially embarrassing among peers.
The increasingly stringent requirements of elite universities have transformed the development of impressive “stats” into an arduous and time-consuming process. Consequently, Korean students face a difficult choice: dedicate themselves entirely to academic excellence to earn respect from peers and consideration from prestigious institutions, or enjoy their high school experience with less focus on credentials but risk losing social standing.
Not all Korean students share identical experiences. Some successfully balance vibrant social lives with academic excellence, while others may not experience these cultural pressures at all. By sharing this perspective, I hope readers can better understand why their Korean classmates often appear so deeply immersed in their multifaceted and demanding lives.
